BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE

I am a psychologist in private practice, and I offer psychotherapy for individuals and for couples. I am also a certified group psychotherapist. My style is professional, yet relaxed and I’m appreciated for being both compassionate and having a sense of humor in my work. Life is filled with transitions in all areas: relationships, children, finances, health, to name but a few. These transitions make for many challenges and my practice focuses on helping people address the issues that come up along the way. I have over 30 years of experience with a very broad spectrum of clients. I see people from very different cultures and from the LGB community. My offices are in Maryland – Bethesda and Silver Spring – though I also maintain a small presence in New Jersey. I am a graduate of Fielding Graduate University in California, Haifa University in Israel, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Over the years, I have developed many areas of expertise. These include the treatment of depression and mood disorders, dissociative disorders, binge eating, bariatric surgery (pre- and post), survivors of trauma and abuse, health and serious illnesses, and senior issues. Periodically I present at professional conferences on subjects such as group therapy and on the treatment of eating disorders, and trauma. I am especially interested in treating couples (married, engaged, co-habiting, dating or other) — to help them to improve a good relationship, to examine a current relationship, to repair a poor one, or to end a bad one in an optimal way. I love what I do. I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist – which says more about how I think than what I do. I tend to be interactive, pragmatic and solution-focused when helping people. I also use complementary techniques such as EMDR, guided imagery and relaxation — but my focus is not on a method, it is on you, my patient. I am a careful listener and am interested in helping you figure out what lies behind or drives problematic behaviors, or the difficulties you may be experiencing in your relationships. I believe that it is important to build on one’s strengths in order to attain personal growth.

CURRENT GROUPS:

The Interpersonal Group for Adults is an ongoing, mixed gender psychotherapy group for men and women who struggle with any of the following: excessive social anxiety, sexual orientation, social isolation, relationship problems, chronic depression, and difficulties attaining career or work goals. Group therapy provides a unique, safe and honest place for its members to learn about themselves and their styles of interaction. Being part of a therapy group helps individuals to experience and learn how to create relationships that are healing, to negotiate conflict, and to obtain valuable feedback about how they interact with others in their social and work environments. In this group we focus on communication, relationship skills and emotional awareness. We practice being more assertive and develop a deeper understanding of the impact we have on each other. A pre-group screening appointment is necessary for all referrals to make certain the group meets the client’s needs and to determine if the client feels they can work well with me. Group Facilitator: Dr Myrna Frank Location: Center for Life Transitions, 4405 East West Hwy, Suite 407, Bethesda MD 20814 Time: Tuesdays at 4-5.15pm. Please call or email Dr Frank at 301.706-5567 or myrnafrank@gmail.com for more information.

FUTURE/PLANNED GROUPS:

Group for Women with Compulsive Overeating is now forming. This women-only group will learn new ways of dealing with weight and eating problems such as night-eating syndrome and binge-eating. Sessions will include the development of coping skills to help its members change self-destructive eating behaviors. Bariatric patients (pre and post) are welcome. Will meet in Bethesda, MD
