BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE


John Caffaro, Ph.D. became a member of AGPA in 1985 and has been on the Institute Faculty since 1996. He served as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Group Psychotherapy from 2013-2018. He is an internationally recognized expert on sibling violence and has trained child maltreatment and mental health professionals throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. His most recent book, Sibling Abuse Trauma, 2nd Edition, NY: Routledge was published in 2014. He is a former expert consultant for the California Statewide Child Welfare Services Redesign and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on child maltreatment, sibling sexual, physical and emotional abuse, group psychotherapy, and contextual approaches to treating adult survivors of interpersonal trauma. Dr. Caffaro currently serves as Distinguished Professor in the APA-Accredited clinical psychology program at the California School of Professional Psychology – Los Angeles. He also holds appointments as Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, Child Psychiatry Residency Training Program and Lecturer in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an elected Fellow of AGPA as well as elected Fellow in Divisions (56) Trauma, (43) Family Psychology, and (37) Child Maltreatment of the American Psychological Association and was recently honored to receive the APA Award for Distinguished Contribution to Family Psychology. Dr. Caffaro draws on more than 25 years of private practice experience in treating adult survivors of interpersonal trauma and divides his time between his psychotherapy practice, teaching, writing, and professional training.
